The Song of Solomon begins with the Bride crying out in chapter 1 verse 2:
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth...
Song of Solomon 1:2
It doesn't begin with the Beloved expressing His love or chasing after the Bride. This is because this book is not a depiction of Christ's love for the sinner, but of the process of maturity of our love for Christ after we have come to accept His love for us.
Up until salvation, this love was no capacity to love Christ or to have a relationship with Him. So Christ expresses over and over again His love and His desire to have a relationship with us through His suffering, death, resurrection, and even the pursuit of our hearts thereafter. The moment we become saved however, we have a responsibility to reciprocate this love. Just like Jesus our Beloved Bridegroom King was a perfect gentleman while we were sinners patiently waiting for us to acknowledge Him, He waits again for an invitation to take us through the journey of becoming a prepared bride. As Paul puts it in Ephesians 5:27: a bride without spot or wrinkle.
In Revelations 3:20, Jesus says:
'Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come and dine with him, and he with Me.
Revelation 3:20 NKJV
This scripture is often quoted in the context of sinners letting Jesus into their hearts, which is However, this was written to a church: a body of believers. The church of Laodicea was accused by the Lord of needing nothing. They were rich, wealthy, and had men on the Forbes list but Jesus said, they were wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked because they had gotten to a place of complacency in their walk with the Lord. Despite their material wealth, their love for Jesus had grown cold.
We must never reach a place of satisfaction where we stop striving for more in our walk with the Lord. Anything left on its own gradually decays and dies, so also it is with our Christian journey.
No matter what you have experienced in God, there is more. Whether you're completely sold out to Jesus, still groaning under the burden of addictions, or struggling to walk with Him consistently, there is more. Jesus stands at the door of your heart today, waiting patiently to be let in again. No matter your struggles or triumphs in the faith, let your heart begin to yearn for Jesus so that you may let Him in again. Dissatisfaction is what births and fuels hunger for more of God. Intimacy and deeper intimacy with Jesus begin with a desire.
PRAY WITH ME:
Lord, thank you for the salvation of my soul, thank you for that which I already know of you. Bring my heart to a place of dissatisfaction where I desire you more and more each day. Amen.
REFLECT AND ACT:
- Has your love for Jesus grown cold? Are you currently satisfied in your relationship with Jesus or do you desire to know Him more?
- Consider and meditate on these words from Luke 1:53:
“Those who hunger for him will always be filled, but the smug and self-satisfied he will send away empty. (TPT)”
