Day 9: Awaken to love (SoS 1:2b)

The bride states the reason for desiring her Beloved kiss in Song of Songs 1:2. She said:

"Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth— For your love is better than wine."

Initial knowledge of Beloved's love was the drive behind her expressed desire. Without God's love for you, your love for Him will be non-existent and that's why 1 John 4:19 says "We love Him because He first loved us".

Without a deep knowledge of God's love as a foundation, your love for Him will be tossed to and fro by the challenges of life, the ideologies of men, and popular opinion till it eventually crumbles.  Paul prays in Ephesians 3:17: reading from the Easy English bible

'I pray that Christ will make his home in you, as you believe in him. Then you will know God's love very well. You will be like trees that have roots which go down deep into God's love. That will make you strong. '

The deeper the root of a tree, the stronger it is and the harder it is to uproot. Strength and consistency in your walk with the Lord are dependent on the depth of your knowledge of His love. So before you can be head over heels for Jesus you must awaken to the reality of God's love for you.

To awaken to the reality of God's love, you must find in the bible the three ways God expresses His love to man:

  1. By direct proclamations of His love:
God is not emotionally distant. He is not shy about His love for man. At every opportunity He can, He both whispers and screams His love. One of God's such proclamations of His love is in Isaiah 43:4 where He tells Israel:

'...you are precious and honored in my sight, and I love you... '

The Bible is God's personal love letter to you. So find every proclamation of His love and personalize them.

  1. By His acts of kindness:
In Jeremiah 31:3, God says:

"I have loved you with an everlasting love, therefore I have drawn you with my loving kindness."

Everything God does is motivated by love. As the Father loves us so does Jesus our Beloved, so He chose to die. The cross is the greatest expression of Christ's love for you. You must know what Jesus did for you in His death, burial, and resurrection. This is well detailed in the new testament, especially the Pauline epistles.

  1. By His affirmations:
One great example was Christ at His baptism. Before He had done anything at all. Before He healed any sick or preached one sermon, God said about Him: 'This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased'. Just like Jesus had to do nothing to earn God's love and acceptance, you don't have to do anything. There are many scriptures about what God thinks and says about us. Find them and meditate on them.

Your knowledge of, study, meditations, and confessions of God's love must include these three. Together they give a perfect, well-rounded perspective on His love for you.

PRAY WITH ME:
Open my eyes Lord to scriptures that show me how much you love me. Let my heart awaken to the reality of your love for me so that I may be rooted and grounded in it, unshakeable in my faith.  Amen.

REFLECT AND ACT:
  • Have you experienced God showing His love for you in these three ways?
  • Find scriptures that express these three. Study, meditate on, know them by heart, and confess them.

Day 152: To the Mountain of Myrrh (SoS 4:6)

Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away, I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense. (Song of Songs 4:6) In the previous lesson, we began to examine the Bride's response to the Beloved's seven-fold compliment. We discussed how she finally gave a positive reply to a request he had previously tendered in SoS 2:17. We examined a part of her response, and now let's explore the next part: ...I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense. We have mentioned a couple of times in this series that myrrh is a burial spice. Its mention in the Bible often signifies death and sacrifice. It was one of the spices presented to Jesus at His birth and was also used to prepare Him for burial. In the same way that Jesus embraced death on the cross, the Bride goes to the mountain of myrrh embracing death to self. She knows resolute obedience will cost her that. Jesus said in Luke 14:27: ...whoever does not bear his cr...

Day 53: The Unforced Rhythms of Grace (SoS 1:7a)

“ Tell me, O you whom I love, Where you feed your flock, Where you make it rest at noon. For why should I be as one who veils herself by the flocks of your companions? Song of Songs 1:7 Aft er the Bride's experience of being overworked, she didn't seek her Beloved in His chambers, nor did she seek Him in a place of leisure. Rather, she sought Him at His workplace. When we find ourselves in a spiritual crisis, especially when we're overworked or burnt out by activities, we must realize that oftentimes, the problem is not how much or what we're doing but how we are doing it. There is only so much the human flesh and mind can handle when it comes to physical work talk less spiritual. Paul did express in 1 Corinthians 15:58 in the Amplified version that we are to labor in our work for the Lord to the point of exhaustion . I believe it's why Paul in praying for the Ephesian church prayed for them to be strengthened with might by God's Spirit in their inner man . Thin...

Day 149: Virtues of the Maturing Bride 6 (SoS 4:4)

Your neck is like the tower of David, Built for an armory, On which hang a thousand bucklers, All shields of mighty men. (Song of Songs 4:4) In Lesson 63, we examined the meaning of the neck as used in the scriptures. We spoke about how the neck represents our will. We also spoke about how a stiff neck in scripture often refers to a stubborn, proud, and unyielding heart before God. However, it is beautified by our submission to Jesus. In SoS 1:10, the Bride's neck was beautified because of her submission to Christ. In this verse, her neck is said to be like a tower. Let's look at that. There isn't any record of a tower of David in the scriptures but Nehemiah 3:25 gives a hint. It mentions a '...tower which projects from the king’s upper house...' Towers are long upright structures built to withstand assaults. They are also often higher than other structures so watchmen were posted there as part of the defense of a city. The Bride's neck like a tower allu...
