Day 7: The kisses of His mouth (SoS 1:2a)

Song of Songs Chapter 1 verse 2:

"Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth..."
Song of Solomon 1:2 NKJV
The Bride expresses here that the kiss happens through the kisses of her Beloved's mouth. Though Jesus our Beloved is real, we can't see or touch Him physically, so what are the kisses of His mouth?

The mouth is primarily an organ of speech before it is an organ to show affection. To understand the kisses of Jesus' mouth, we'll run through John where Jesus fed 5000 men with five loaves of bread and two fish.

Seeing this great wonder, people sought Him out the day after for another of such. But when He wouldn't succumb and spoke to them instead about seeking Him, the bread of life, they turned away from Him. Jesus at that moment asked if the disciples would leave too and Peter said:

...“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also, we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
John 6:68‭-‬69 NKJV

In simple terms, Peter told Jesus that His words were their very life. They were not following Him for the miracles and signs unlike the crowd, they were following Him for His words. They realized that as bread sustains physical life, the words of Jesus sustain spiritual life.

The Centre for Bible Engagement did a study and found that people who read the bible four times a week are 59% less likely to view pornography, about 200% more likely to share the gospel with others, 68% less likely to engage in premarital sex, 30% less likely to feel lonely and 61% less likely to smoke or drink. Even spiritual stagnancy drops by 60% and anger issues by 30%.

The Bible is not just another bundle of ink-stained paper or another app on your phone to show you're a Christian. John chapter 1 says Jesus is the Word and in the Word is life. So to get intimate with the word is to get intimate with Jesus, to get intimate with Jesus is to enjoy life abundantly.

Whatever challenge may be keeping you from a rich, vibrant life both physical and spiritual cannot stand against the life in the word.

In conclusion, I'll say this: when you're in love with someone, you like to spend time conversing with them. You even read their texts and listen to their voice notes over and over again. Every time you do that you have the same fuzzy feeling you did when you first read or heard those. The bible fuels and satisfies our love for Jesus. The words of Jesus are the kisses of His mouth and it is primarily through them we experience His love.

PRAY WITH ME:
I realize today that your word is life. As I commit to paying more attention and give more time to fellowshipping with you through your word, Lord reveals yourself to me and lets me love you more each day. Amen.

REFLECT AND ACT:
  • How important is the word and what is written in it to you? Make a plan to give more attention to reading the word of God each day.
  • Are there any habits or fears you're struggling with that are holding you back from intimacy with Jesus? Find life-giving scriptures that address them, read, study, confess, and meditate on them till you experience victory.

Day 152: To the Mountain of Myrrh (SoS 4:6)

Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away, I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense. (Song of Songs 4:6) In the previous lesson, we began to examine the Bride's response to the Beloved's seven-fold compliment. We discussed how she finally gave a positive reply to a request he had previously tendered in SoS 2:17. We examined a part of her response, and now let's explore the next part: ...I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense. We have mentioned a couple of times in this series that myrrh is a burial spice. Its mention in the Bible often signifies death and sacrifice. It was one of the spices presented to Jesus at His birth and was also used to prepare Him for burial. In the same way that Jesus embraced death on the cross, the Bride goes to the mountain of myrrh embracing death to self. She knows resolute obedience will cost her that. Jesus said in Luke 14:27: ...whoever does not bear his cr...

Day 53: The Unforced Rhythms of Grace (SoS 1:7a)

“ Tell me, O you whom I love, Where you feed your flock, Where you make it rest at noon. For why should I be as one who veils herself by the flocks of your companions? Song of Songs 1:7 Aft er the Bride's experience of being overworked, she didn't seek her Beloved in His chambers, nor did she seek Him in a place of leisure. Rather, she sought Him at His workplace. When we find ourselves in a spiritual crisis, especially when we're overworked or burnt out by activities, we must realize that oftentimes, the problem is not how much or what we're doing but how we are doing it. There is only so much the human flesh and mind can handle when it comes to physical work talk less spiritual. Paul did express in 1 Corinthians 15:58 in the Amplified version that we are to labor in our work for the Lord to the point of exhaustion . I believe it's why Paul in praying for the Ephesian church prayed for them to be strengthened with might by God's Spirit in their inner man . Thin...

Day 149: Virtues of the Maturing Bride 6 (SoS 4:4)

Your neck is like the tower of David, Built for an armory, On which hang a thousand bucklers, All shields of mighty men. (Song of Songs 4:4) In Lesson 63, we examined the meaning of the neck as used in the scriptures. We spoke about how the neck represents our will. We also spoke about how a stiff neck in scripture often refers to a stubborn, proud, and unyielding heart before God. However, it is beautified by our submission to Jesus. In SoS 1:10, the Bride's neck was beautified because of her submission to Christ. In this verse, her neck is said to be like a tower. Let's look at that. There isn't any record of a tower of David in the scriptures but Nehemiah 3:25 gives a hint. It mentions a '...tower which projects from the king’s upper house...' Towers are long upright structures built to withstand assaults. They are also often higher than other structures so watchmen were posted there as part of the defense of a city. The Bride's neck like a tower allu...
