Today we move on to the content of the Bride's desire. What she meant when she said in SoS chapter 1 verse 2:
Let him kiss me...
Song of Solomon 1:2 NKJV
We can desire many things from Jesus, but to experience intimacy with Him, we must desire to be kissed by Him. What does it mean to be kissed by our Beloved?
...
There are 3 implications of a kiss:
- A kiss is used to express affection:
Ranging from light kisses between friends and family to deep, passionate, and intense by lovers. This request by the bride was a desire to experience how deep, intense, and passionate her Beloved love is. There are certain acts God does solely to reveal His love to us. The greatest of such is the cross. Ephesians 5:2 tells us "...Christ loved us and gave Himself for us". But beyond that, every day, God shows how much He loves us through His interventions in our day-to-day affairs.
- A kiss draws into something deeper.
In sexual intercourse, a kiss serves as both foreplay and part of the very act itself. It fuels and sustains the desire for intimacy. The Bible often uses the word know to describe sexual intimacy between a man and a woman. So the Bride was asking for a deeper knowledge of the Beloved, beyond what she had previously known. Paul prays in Colossians 1:10 that the Colossian brethren will "increase in the knowledge of God", knowing Him better and better each day.
- The third request can be derived from another meaning of the Hebrew word translated kiss here:
It means to be equipped. In a more literal sense, to be kindled or to catch fire.
You see passion is the S.I. unit of love, it's what we use to measure love. Passion is tangible, visible, and measurable. To be on fire for God is to be passionate about God and all that concerns Him.
Jesus' passion for His Father's house was so strong it reminded the disciples of David's words:
My love for you has my heart on fire! My passion for your house consumes me! Nothing will turn me away, even though I endure all the insults of those who insult you.
Psalms 69:9 TPT
This is what the maiden asks for. A love that is undeterred by people's opinions and insults.
These three are not just prayer points, they are also yardsticks to measure your love for Jesus. So when we see growth in any of these areas, we know we're growing in love.
PRAY WITH ME:
Thank you God for the cross and all it represents. More than anything else help me God to daily see and experience your love for me, to increase in knowledge of You, and to burn with an all-consuming passion for you. Amen.
REFLECT AND ACT:
- What acts of God in the past have shown His love for you?
- Are you growing and increasing in your knowledge of God and His ways each day?
- Do you shy away from offending people with your love for Jesus?
