Day 4: The two tests of desire (SoS 1:2)

Like the Bride asked in SoS  chapter 1 verse 2:

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth...
Song of Solomon 1:2

we established that we must express our desire for a deeper walk with Jesus in prayer. But just like when you invite someone to come into your home the door must be unlocked we must unlock the door for our Beloved Jesus to come Him when we invite Him in.

There is a song about the Messiah King and His bride in Psalm 45. First, the song talks about the Messiah, then it reveals two other characters in this song, the maidens of the court and the King's Bride. It states that both of these characters are of royal birth: daughters of a king. Yet only one found favor with the King.

Just like in this song, the SoS has a category of characters referred to as the daughters of Jerusalem. No special distinguishing factor between them and the Bride yet they seemed to be just spectators of this love story.

At salvation, we all become daughters of the King brought into the courts of God. Yet some believers have more intimate relationships with the Lord than others. What distinguishes them? Is it at the Lord's discretion to choose who gets to know Him more than the others? What does it take to be chosen to be the king's Bride among all the maidens of the court? Our clue lies in verses 10 & 11 of Psalm 45 where the psalmist first addresses the Bride as a daughter, a maiden in the court. Then in the next starts to describe her wedding procession. Meaning she took to advice and became the Bride of the King despite all the other maidens who desired the same. Psalm 45 verses 10 & 11 in The Passion Translation reads:

'Now listen, daughter, pay attention, and forget about your past. Put behind you every attachment to the familiar, even those who once were close to you! For your royal Bridegroom is ravished by your beautiful brightness. Bow in reverence before him, for he is your Lord!'

From this we can deduce the two tests of desire:

  1. To forget about the past, and put behind every attachment to the familiar.
Many versions say to forget her father's house, her people, and her family. This correlates with Jesus' words in Matthew 10:37:

'He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. '

So, if we truly desire Jesus, we must be willing to make Him the priority in our lives; to love Him above all others. We must want Him more than we want anything or anyone else.
  1. To reverence the King:
Many versions put it in different ways: to adore, worship, obey, bow, submit... All mean the same. Again I quote Jesus saying in John 14:15 (AMP):

“If you [really] love Me, you will keep and obey My commandments."

Worship and obedience are intertwined. To desire Him is to honor Him. To honor Him is to obey Him. Worship is not what you do in church or your prayer times alone, it's also in your everyday decisions. You must live every moment of every day as worship to God.

If we really desire Jesus, our desire will pass these two tests of desire. Without them, our expressed desire will just be mere words. We will then be like the homeowner who invites his guest to come in but the door is locked.

PRAY WITH ME:
Lord, thank you for bringing me into Your court and calling me your very own. Help to let go of my past and every attachment to the familiar. Help me to honor you with every moment of my day through my speech, actions, and attitudes. Amen.

REFLECT AND ACT:
  • Are there relationships and associations that mean more to you than your relationship with the Lord?
  • In what areas of life: relationships, finances, career... have you not honored and submitted to God as you should? Make a decision today to make adjustments in these areas.

Day 53: The Unforced Rhythms of Grace (SoS 1:7a)

“ Tell me, O you whom I love, Where you feed your flock, Where you make it rest at noon. For why should I be as one who veils herself by the flocks of your companions? Song of Songs 1:7 Aft er the Bride's experience of being overworked, she didn't seek her Beloved in His chambers, nor did she seek Him in a place of leisure. Rather, she sought Him at His workplace. When we find ourselves in a spiritual crisis, especially when we're overworked or burnt out by activities, we must realize that oftentimes, the problem is not how much or what we're doing but how we are doing it. There is only so much the human flesh and mind can handle when it comes to physical work talk less spiritual. Paul did express in 1 Corinthians 15:58 in the Amplified version that we are to labor in our work for the Lord to the point of exhaustion . I believe it's why Paul in praying for the Ephesian church prayed for them to be strengthened with might by God's Spirit in their inner man . Thin...

Day 28: The Cycle of the Intimate (SoS 1:4b)

" Draw me away! We will run after you. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will be glad and rejoice in you. We will remember your love more than wine. Rightly do they love you." Song of Songs 1:4 Mark 6:7-12 documents Jesus sending His disciples out two by two on a missionary journey. He gave them authority and power over evil spirits as He gave them the task of proclaiming the gospel of the Kingdom. They did as He instructed. They preached repentance, anointed and healed many who were sick, and cast out demons. When they returned they reported all they had done and taught; the miracles, the signs, the souls saved. You can imagine how ecstatic they were to do the very things they had seen Jesus do. How exciting it was to command a demon to come out and it obeyed. I can imagine how proud Jesus was. For Him, it was a small glimpse into a future when we will do the same things in His name. In answer to their report in verses 31 and 32 of Mark 6, Jesus said: ".....

Day 149: Virtues of the Maturing Bride 6 (SoS 4:4)

Your neck is like the tower of David, Built for an armory, On which hang a thousand bucklers, All shields of mighty men. (Song of Songs 4:4) In Lesson 63, we examined the meaning of the neck as used in the scriptures. We spoke about how the neck represents our will. We also spoke about how a stiff neck in scripture often refers to a stubborn, proud, and unyielding heart before God. However, it is beautified by our submission to Jesus. In SoS 1:10, the Bride's neck was beautified because of her submission to Christ. In this verse, her neck is said to be like a tower. Let's look at that. There isn't any record of a tower of David in the scriptures but Nehemiah 3:25 gives a hint. It mentions a '...tower which projects from the king’s upper house...' Towers are long upright structures built to withstand assaults. They are also often higher than other structures so watchmen were posted there as part of the defense of a city. The Bride's neck like a tower allu...
