Day 31: From Chamber to Chamber (SoS 1:4c)

"Draw me away! We will run after you. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will be glad and rejoice in you. We will remember your love more than wine. Rightly do they love you." Song  of Songs 1:4

Each day, many guests come and go in a house. Some will never make it past the gate, some will make it to the front door, some to the living room but only friends, friends who have proven themselves trustworthy make it to the bedroom.

The Bride says here that the King brought her into the most intimate place in His court, His bedroom.

The chamber is where we get to know the King personally. Where He takes His intimate friends. It's just like oftentimes Jesus went to a secluded place with the twelve disciples. Sometimes He goes with only Peter, James, and John.

In Matthew 6: 5-6, Jesus said:

“Whenever you pray, be sincere and not like the pretenders who love the attention they receive while praying before others in the meetings and on street corners. Believe me, they’ve already received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your innermost chamber and be alone with Father God, praying to him in secret. And your Father, who sees all you do, will reward you openly. (TPT)

In this scripture, Jesus was emphasizing being alone before God with absolutely no one in sight. The idea is to meet with God in the most hidden and concealed place you can think of.

The reason is that praying in secret rids you of all hypocrisy and human attention so you can focus on the Lord alone. In that place, we can commune with God in all sincerity of heart. It's where we search God and He in turn searches us. It's where we bare ourselves to Him and He in turn bares Himself to us. When we come to Him in our chamber, sincere and open to Him, He brings us to His.

Because of the seclusion of the chamber, and its separation from the outside world, it's a place of not just encounter but vulnerability. It's why David said in Psalm 14:2:

“Yahweh looks down in love, looking over all of Adam’s sons and daughters. He’s looking to see if there is anyone who acts wisely, any who are searching for God and wanting to please him.” (TPT)

And says also in Psalm 139:23:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties”

So David was saying in these psalms that God wants us to search and know Him as He also wants to search and know us. So like He testified of knowing Abraham I  Genesis 18:19 He can say the same of us.

Just like intercourse between a man and his wife happens behind closed doors, to access the chamber of King Jesus, we must be in secret. There we create memories with Him just as we do with a human lover. Waiting in secret is a sign that we accept His invitation into His chamber. Then He comes and by Himself brings us to that chamber.

PRAY WITH ME:
Lord, rid my heart of all hypocrisy and desire to please men as I spend time with you. I open my heart to you, search me and know me as I in turn search and know you in the secret place. Amen.

REFLECT AND ACT:
  • Do you have a chamber, your own secret place where you wait on the King till He brings you into His chamber? How often do you do that?
  • When in church or some other gathering of believers, are your actions sincere or do you do what you do to be noticed?
Ponder these questions and make adjustments where necessary.

Day 53: The Unforced Rhythms of Grace (SoS 1:7a)

“ Tell me, O you whom I love, Where you feed your flock, Where you make it rest at noon. For why should I be as one who veils herself by the flocks of your companions? Song of Songs 1:7 Aft er the Bride's experience of being overworked, she didn't seek her Beloved in His chambers, nor did she seek Him in a place of leisure. Rather, she sought Him at His workplace. When we find ourselves in a spiritual crisis, especially when we're overworked or burnt out by activities, we must realize that oftentimes, the problem is not how much or what we're doing but how we are doing it. There is only so much the human flesh and mind can handle when it comes to physical work talk less spiritual. Paul did express in 1 Corinthians 15:58 in the Amplified version that we are to labor in our work for the Lord to the point of exhaustion . I believe it's why Paul in praying for the Ephesian church prayed for them to be strengthened with might by God's Spirit in their inner man . Thin...

Day 152: To the Mountain of Myrrh (SoS 4:6)

Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away, I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense. (Song of Songs 4:6) In the previous lesson, we began to examine the Bride's response to the Beloved's seven-fold compliment. We discussed how she finally gave a positive reply to a request he had previously tendered in SoS 2:17. We examined a part of her response, and now let's explore the next part: ...I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense. We have mentioned a couple of times in this series that myrrh is a burial spice. Its mention in the Bible often signifies death and sacrifice. It was one of the spices presented to Jesus at His birth and was also used to prepare Him for burial. In the same way that Jesus embraced death on the cross, the Bride goes to the mountain of myrrh embracing death to self. She knows resolute obedience will cost her that. Jesus said in Luke 14:27: ...whoever does not bear his cr...

Day 50: Keeping Your Vineyard (SoS 1:6d)

“Do not look upon me, because I am dark, Because the sun has tanned me. My mother’s sons were angry with me; They made me the keeper of the vineyards, But my own vineyard I have not kept. ”    Song of Songs 1:6 In John chapter 15 Jesus gives us the blueprint of a fruitful vineyard. He said He is the True Vine, God is the Vinedresser and we are the branches. Then He proceeds to state the responsibility of each party in keeping the vineyard. Let's look at them. 1. Responsibility of Jesus as the True Vine: Just like a branch cannot exist talk less bear fruit without the vine, we exist in God because of Jesus. He is the source and sustainer of eternal life which we received at salvation and it is this empowers us to bear fruit. 2. The Responsibilities of God as the Vinedresser: The Father is the One working on us to bring forth good works (fruits) for his glory. Jesus lists the responsibilities of God as the Vinedresser in verse 2. First to the branches that don't have fruit and t...
