"Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth— For your love is better than wine."
Song of Songs 1:2
The Bride tells her beloved the reason for her longing: His love is better than wine. The word better means good in the widest sense. It expresses something far surpassing the other. Something excellent and incomparable.
So she was saying her Beloved's love can do the same things wine can do but in greater and more extraordinary measures. What does wine/alcohol do? It makes you lose control, makes you carefree, makes you happy, makes you feel good/better, and makes you forget your troubles. Christ's love can do all these but how does His love do it in a better way?
- Wine is temporal, Christ's love is unending.
No matter how much wine a man takes, it will eventually wear off. Christ's love for us however never wears off. As stated in Jeremiah 31:3 it is everlasting love. As stated in Romans 8:38-39, nothing, absolutely nothing can separate us from it.
So regardless of you or whoever, regardless of ugly circumstances and challenges, regardless of your past or present, Christ's love is unchanging and everlasting. You can't make God love you more or less, nor can anybody else. He chose to die for you when you did not even know or regard Him in any way, what would He do for you now? God's love is greater than your errors and imperfections
- Wine does not proffer solutions to problems, but Christ's love saves.
Many drown their sorrows in alcohol. But no matter how much or how long a man drinks in times of trouble, his problems remain. Many times that few hours of intoxication adds to the problem. But there is no challenge man faces that are outside the scope of Christ's love. Romans 8:37 says:
"Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us."
Through the cross, His love sets free from sin, heals, protects, delivers, restores, provides... You name everything good thing you can think of, and you will find in His love. Paul says in Romans 8:32 that God will freely give us all things. It's part of the salvation package.
- Wine destroys, but Christ's love upgrades.
Excessive wine, especially over time, destroys not just a man's body but his life. Many diseases are either caused or triggered by alcohol. Christ's love however builds up our lives.
His love does not just save, He calls us to partner with Him to get others saved.
It does not just heal, it gives supernatural health: Romans 8:11 tells us His Spirit gives life to our mortal bodies.
It does not just provides, it prospers. 2 Corinthians 8:9 tells us He became poor so that we through His poverty might be rich.
He does not just deliver, He makes us fellow deliverers. The book Acts of Apostles is proof man can partner with God to deliver fellow men from every oppression.
Every experience of our Beloved Jesus' love can be classified under at least one of these three. It is the way our Bridegroom King's love is better than wine.
PRAY WITH ME:
Thank you Jesus for your unending, saving, and upgrading love. I'm grateful for the ways I have been a partaker of your love. Bring me to a deeper understanding and experience of these characteristics of your love. Amen.
REFLECT AND ACT:
- Call to mind the ways and times you have experienced Christ's unending, saving, and upgrading love.
- Many believers experience the unending and saving aspects of His love and become satisfied. But God wants us to live upgraded lives. To go beyond met needs to abundance. An abundance that overflows to help others experience His love. Don't settle for less than an upgrade. It's part of the package.
